Tottenham Hotspur fans may be ruing their luck after hitting the post three times against West Brom in their potentially pivotal 1-1 draw with the Baggies but it could be much worse – they could be Arsenal.

Statistics compiled by the Premier League have revealed that when it comes to hitting the woodwork this season, Arsenal are top of the table.

Gunners Shooting Blanks

In total, the Gunners have hit the post or bar a frustrating 19 times already this season at a rate of roughly once every two games.

Moreover, while Spurs may have endured a flurry of near misses against West Brom, they remain a close second when it comes to striking the woodwork, having racked up 18 attempts of this kind.

Toffees frustrated

West Ham are also on 18, while Everton’s current woes under Roberto Martinez may have much to do Lukaku and his team-mates' inability to find the back of the net, with the Toffees hitting the bar or post 17 times this term.

Their Merseyside rivals have not fared much better either with Liverpool hitting the woodwork 15 times already this season.

Usual suspects

In terms of individual post-hitters, Lukaku, Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy, perhaps unsurprisingly, lead the way having each struck the woodwork six times in the Premier League this term.

Ross Barkley and Alexis Sanchez closely follow them on five, with Arsenal’s deficiencies in front of goal clear for all to see.

So while Arsenal may be out of the title race and in danger of missing out on a top four finish altogether, they can at least console themselves with the fact that things could have been very different had luck gone their way a little more.
