Joey Barton awkwardly refused Championship winners' medal

Joey Barton will return to the Premier League for the 2016/17 campaign after a magnificent season for Burnley.

Under Sean Dyche's guidance, the former QPR man established himself as a leading player for the club as they secured the Championship title.

Barton, 33, may not have the best reputation in the game - he has been involved in a number of controversial moments on and off the pitch throughout his career - but his ability shouldn't be underestimated.

After a fine season in England's second tier, it's now clearly the time for Barton and his teammates to celebrate their success.

On Monday, then, Dyche's players collected their Champions winners' medals, but there was a problem...

No medal

Barton and teammate James Tarkowski failed to receive one. As you can see in the video from Sky Sports below, the midfield veteran was well and truly snubbed as he attempted to collect his medal.

In truth, it was all rather comical and splendidly awkward.

Why, then, did the Football League allow this to happen? Well, Burnley have taken to social media to offer an explanation and an apology.

Writing on their Twitter account, Burnley explained: "Burnley Football Club would like to apologise for the mix-up during the medal ceremony. (1/3) #Champions

"The Football League advised the club that 25 medals were to be presented, but the club put forward 27 players. (2/3) #Champions

"We would like to apologise to the @football-league for this administrative error and every player will be receive one. (3/3) #Champions"

Twitter reacts

That's that then, but it remains amusing nonetheless. Barton duly took to social media but didn't appear to be too upset...

Barton appeared to take the situation with a pinch of salt, but that didn't stop fans on Twitter trolling him in style. The midfielder has had his critics throughout the course of his career, so it's not exactly surprising that fans on social media enjoyed his awkward moment.
