Right now in the UFC, perhaps the most high-profile Australian fighter is Robert 'The Reaper' Whittaker - his 7-2 record taking him to the heady heights of sixth in the organisation's official Middleweight rankings.

The 27-year-old, who was actually born in neighbouring New Zealand, might have just lost his title as 'Australia's biggest UFC star' today, however, to a pair of koala bears.

UFC - Australia style

Yes, you read that right. That wasn't a typo. Two koala bears are currently going viral as the stars of a video in which they can be seen fighting in a style that looks remarkably similar to something more suited to the UFC octagon. Scroll down this article to see the 'bout' for yourself.

As you can see, both marsupials have a solid grappling technique and it appears to be a fairly even matchup, although their take down moves could use a little tuning up.

The koala who starts on the right, though, appears to have the upper hand for much of the contest, but all credit to his opponent for getting out of what looked to be a near submission around the 47-second mark.

He (or possible she) will, though, surely be looking at retrospective punishment as the footage clearly shows him/her biting 'right koala' as he/she looks for the decisive win. We're not sure how the officials - we're assuming that was 'Lucy' the dog in this instance - missed it in the first place. Poor from her.

The video is already generating a lot of attention on social media, with fans offering their own commentary on 'UFC-Australia style'. It already has close to one million views on YouTube at the time of writing.

Fortunately, it looks like both animals escaped from the bout unscathed, which is more than can be said for one high-profile fighter who appeared in the last big Australian UFC event.

Ronda Rousey's infamous KO defeat at the hands of Holly Holm, of course, occurred at UFC 193 in Melbourne back in November 2015.

While that event may have been watched by a 56,000-strong crowd and millions on TV, these two koalas, despite going viral, are some way off reaching that level just yet.
