Sometimes gimmicks don’t work and need to be retired, meaning that new gimmicks need to be tested in order to find something that works.
For example, Glenn Jacobs had two mediocre gimmicks as ‘Issac Yankem’ & ‘Fake Diesel’ before he finally found success as ‘Kane’.
One gimmick that simply hasn't worked at all is 'Stardust'. A bizarre character who should have had a feud with 'Goldust' because it was set up to be brother vs brother.

However, that feud never happened and Cody Rhodes, aka Stardust, was stuck in mid-card obscurity.
Cody Rhodes first graced our screens as a tag team partner with former WWE superstar ‘Hardcore Holly’, later being pushed as a member of the ‘Legacy’ faction, one such that focused purely on the fact that he is a second generation superstar.
After this stint, he had various other gimmicks such as his narcissistic ‘Dashing Cody Rhodes’ character (pictured below), however, he never truly settled on a gimmick.
Rhodes’ recent ‘Stardust’ gimmick has been a disappointment due to the fact that it has run parallel with Goldust’s gimmick, seeming more like an imitation than anything else.
Whilst it was understandable during their reign together as Tag-Team Champions, and then their subsequent feud thereafter, ever since then, the gimmick seems to have run its course, and in the process seems to have halted Rhodes’ success in the WWE.
With the recent hints on his Twitter page, we might be seeing the return of Cody Rhodes, and the retirement of his Stardust gimmick.
Considering the fact that Cody is a six-time WWE Tag Team champion and two-time Intercontinental champion, a mid-card push would be a bit of an anti-climax. It would not offer the fans anything new, and it would not present anything positive for Rhodes’ WWE career.
If Cody is to return, now is the time to give him a main event push, and give the fans someone new in the WWE title picture.
If this happens, Rhodes should become a heel champion as he seems to be particularly good at attracting heat from the WWE universe.
