Football News

Andros Townsend has been called up to the England squad for this summer’s European Championships in France and many people on Twitter are unhappy about the Newcastle United winger’s inclusion.

The 24-year-old is one of 26 players called up to Roy Hodgson’s squad after putting in some eye-catching performances for the Magpies over recent weeks.

However, Townsend was unable to prevent Newcastle from suffering relegation to the Championship earlier this month.

He joined the north-east outfit on a permanent transfer from Tottenham during the January transfer window and has scored four goals in 13 league appearances, including a magnificent free-kick in Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at the end of April.

The skillful winger, who has always performed reasonably well for England when called upon in the past, had been selected over the out-of-sorts Theo Walcott.

There are, however, no guarantees that Townsend will make England’s final 23-man squad.

England kick-off their Euro 2016 campaign against Russia on June 11, followed by matches against Wales and Slovakia.

The Three Lions are currently around 9/1 with the bookmakers to win the tournament - making them fourth favourites behind tournament hosts France, world champions Germany and Spain.
