Manchester City are right to part ways with Manuel Pellegrini

Manchester City all but secured their place in the Champions League next season after scraping through a draw against Swansea City on the final day of the season.

It was the kind of performance one has come to expect from City of late, brilliant in flashes, but lacking the killer instincts.

It was Pellegrini's final game in charge of the club and it left much to be desired, much like the Chilean's reign.

Pellegrini announced himself to English football in spectacular fashion, securing a league and cup double during his first season at Manchester City.

City amassed an impressive tally of 86 points in that campaign, belting in 102 goals in the process. It was just the kind of flamboyant football that City fans craved for under Roberto Mancini.

Sadly for City, the Pellegrini reign simply stagnated after those incredible highs. The Chilean manager failed to bring home a trophy in the following season.

With Chelsea's incredible failings this season, many expected City to wrap up a third league title in five seasons, but it was Leicester City who ran out champions, and City were left scrapping for a Champions League spot

Manchester City have certainly announced themselves as one of the league's frontrunners, but they are yet to truly dominate it.

This season, City collected just 66 points, only three more than Southampton with almost six times the budget.

Big money signings like Eliaquim Mangala and Raheem Sterling have failed to hit the ground running under the Chilean's guidance and perhaps the incoming Pep Guardiola might be able to bring out the best in them.

In his final few months at the helm, Pellegrini resembled a disheartened figure and failed to motivate his side when it mattered the most.

Pellegrini would certainly be leaving City with good memories but also with a sense of underachievement.
