Linda Pizzuti Henry and her husband, John, were in attendance at St. Jakob-Park for Wednesday night’s Europa League final between Liverpool and Sevilla.
The Reds’ owners watched their team take the lead through a wonderful Daniel Sturridge goal before half-time, but left the stadium in Basel dejected after three second-half goals earned a third successive European title for their Spanish opponents.
On Thursday morning, Linda posted a collage of photos from the evening on Instagram alongside a touching message to the Liverpool supporters. (Scroll down this page to see the post).

“The drama of surviving all of the rounds of elimination on the long journey to the Europa League Final was exciting and gratifying,” she wrote. “The famous Liverpool supporters gathered in Basel from around the world. There were more supporters outside the stadium who made the journey despite not being able to get tickets than the lucky ones who were at the match.
“The match started with the pomp and palpable excitement and nerves that is truly a wonder to experience. Liverpool was ahead at the half, fans watching were cautiously optimistic. 45 long minutes later the match was over and Sevilla, the reigning champs, won the cup again.
“We left the stadium quietly, all a little heart broken. Disappointed to not bring home the cup, sad for the tens of thousands of supporters who had travelled to support their team, for the millions who watched at home with hope in their hearts.
“Jurgen's words that we will come back stronger next season leaves me grateful for the experience and journey to the final, and excited for next season.
“Thanks, friends, for joining me on this journey. #ynwa. PS- photos taken pre match. Debated sharing, but decided to remember the excitement of the experience, despite the end result.”
Fans pin blame on Alberto Moreno
Many Liverpool fans - and even some pundits - pinned the blame on left-back Alberto Moreno for the Premier League side’s defeat.
The 23-year-old defender was handed a 2/10 rating by the Liverpool Echo, who said Moreno’s “brainless defending gave Sevilla the momentum to win”.
Jurgen Klopp takes responsibility for defeat
However, in his post-match press conference, Jurgen Klopp refused to blame any of his players and instead shouldered responsibility for the team’s defeat.
“At this moment, I’m responsible for this performance,” the Liverpool boss told BT Sport. “No criticism allowed for my side, for anybody.
“I’ve spoken to my players already because tomorrow we will split all over the world so that’s how it is.”
