Jack Wilshere is criticised on Twitter for his performance against Turkey

England’s friendly against Turkey was a very important match for Jack Wilshere.

The Arsenal midfielder had missed almost the entire campaign for his club with a fibula injury - making just three appearances at the end of the season.

Despite playing very little football, Wilshere was fortunate enough to be named in Roy Hodgson’s provisional 26-man squad for the European Championships this summer.

Three players from the 26 will drop out ahead of the tournament which starts on June 10.

So, with three friendlies against Turkey, Australia and Portugal over the next couple of weeks, those players that are in danger of missing out needed to prove themselves - especially Wilshere given his lack of football.

So when the 24-year-old was handed a start for the exhibition match against the Turks, it was an ideal opportunity to make his mark.

But, during the 65 minutes that Wilshere was on the pitch at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, he was pretty underwhelming.

His display was so disappointing that he was trending on Twitter - and not for the right reasons. Scroll down to see some of the best tweets:

Wilshere began the match in a midfield trio of Eric Dier and Dele Alli - two players he faces competition from for a place in the squad. While it’s highly likely the Spurs pair will be named in the 23, Wilshere’s place is looking increasingly in doubt.

Ross Barkley, Fabian Delph, Danny Drinkwater, Jordan Henderson and James Milner are all vying for a place in the centre of the pitch.

There's no doubt that Wilshere is a quality player when fully fit but it remains to be seen if he's able to emulate his best form in time for the competition this summer.
