John Cena's possible feud upon WWE in-ring return - it isn't Rusev

John Cena will be returning to the WWE for the first time in months on Monday Night Raw on Memorial Day next week.

The former United States Champion has been out of action since January after he underwent surgery to repair his shoulder. He was expected to be on the sidelines for nine months, but he is instead returning after five, living up to his Super Cena nickname.

Recent rumors have suggested that when the 15-time World Champion comes back next week, he will feud with Rusev for the United States Championship once more, before going on to face Roman Reigns at SummerSlam for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship later this year.

However, Cageside Seats have speculated this may not be the case, and that he will feud against another superstar - who is also a familiar foe - before going on to chase down The Bulgarian Brute.

They said: "Look for John Cena to feud with Alberto Del Rio for a while after he comes back next Monday."

Cena vs Del Rio would be an exciting feud as we've known from the times they have faced one another in the past. The leader of the Cenation faced Mexico's Greatest Export at Hell in a Cell last year, where he lost the United States Championship.

After time away to film American Grit, Cena came back and went on to win his rematch via disqualification for the title, as The League of Nations members, Sheamus and Rusev, interfered in the match.

Therefore, this potential match between Cena and Del Rio could be booked to determine the new number one contender for the United States Championship.

Rusev is scheduled to face Kalisto in a rematch for the US title on this week's SmackDown. If he is to win this match, this would open the door for a new number one contender for the championship, to which The Bulgarian Brute could issue an open challenge for.

Enter John Cena.

The leader of the Cenation appears the stronger competitor of the two in a match that produces a lot of near falls, before he puts Rusev in the STF. Just as it looks like current United States Champion is about to tap out, the Mexican superstar enters the ring and attacks Cena, calling an end to the match as The Bulgarian rolls away with his title to safety.

Cena takes control and Del Rio escapes the ring, but before the segment ends, Stephanie McMahon comes out and issues a number one contenders match for the United States Championship between the two at Money in the Bank next month.

Cena should come out on top overall to face Rusev at Battleground where he should lose after a distraction from Lana to make The Bulgarian Brute look a strong heel, before going on to face Reigns at SummerSlam later this year for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
