Louis van Gaal delivered an emotional speech to Manchester United staff members on Sunday morning when it became clear that he was set for the axe at Old Trafford.

This has been reported by the Daily Mail, who also claim that the club were shocked to see reports emerge of Van Gaal's imminent dismissal moments after their FA Cup triumph.

It appears that the Red Devils did not leak the news and were hoping to hand Van Gaal a dignified exit.

Despite numerous reports claiming that Van Gaal was set for the axe, Manchester United didn't break the news until Monday evening.

The report suggests Van Gaal was behind the delay as he had asked the club to make the announcement when he was out of the country.

LVG saga

In fact, it has been documented that United officials arranged a private jet to take Van Gaal and his wife to their Algarve holiday home.

But the writing was quickly on the wall for Van Gaal just moments after he secured his first - and quite possibly last - trophy in England.

As well as making an emotional speech, he also gave a classy statement following his departure from Old Trafford.

Jose incoming

Now, though, sights are firmly fixed on former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who looks set to replace him at the helm shortly.

The Portuguese tactician, who was dismissed as Chelsea boss back in December, certainly has a point to prove on English soil and will be desperate to take the Red Devils back to the summit of the Premier League.

He has the quite the job on his hands, however, and it's extremely likely that he will look to change the dynamic of the United side over the course of the summer.

Mourinho's yet to be announced as the club's next manager, but he has already been linked with a whole host of new signings. If reports are to be believed, the likes of John Stones, Willian, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and co. could all be targeted before the start of the new campaign. It's safe to say that it's going to be an interesting summer for all involved.

There could also be a number of outgoings at the club, too. Ultimately, certain players just haven't been good enough recently and a ruthless Mourinho will surely move one or two high-profile names on.
