Juan Mata wants assurances from Jose Mourinho over Manchester United future

Juan Mata's advisors are set to take action after Jose Mourinho was named the next manager of Manchester United.

This has been reported by the Daily Mail, who claim that the playmaker's advisors are set to seek assurances from Mourinho to confirm whether he still has a future at Old Trafford.

It was Mourinho, of course, who offloaded Mata to Manchester United in January of 2014 after the Spaniard failed to claim a regular place in his Chelsea side.

In fact, just three weeks before he was offloaded to the Theatre of Drams, the Mail claim that Mata's advisors were told by the Special One that the technically gifted midfielder still had a role to play in west London.

It's far from certain, then, as to whether Mourinho will look to axe Mata for the second time in his managerial career.

Mata, 28, scored United's equalising goal during their FA Cup final victory over Crystal Palace last weekend and has enjoyed a prominent role in the side over the course of the last two years.

Despite arriving in Manchester as one of the classiest attacking midfielders in the Premier League, the Spaniard has been utilised on the right-hand side of midfield more often than not.

Mata comments

It was back in October, of course, when Mata hit back at Mourinho after being labelled a 'luxury player'.

He stated: "If a luxury player is a player who scores and assists and has good stats, then I’m happy to be a luxury player.

"I want luxury players in my team. I’ve scored as many goals for Manchester United in the Premier League as for Chelsea, but in something like 30 games less.

"In terms of scoring and assisting, I’m quite happy with the stats, and stats don’t lie. They are facts."

What now?

Now, though, Mata has it all to do in the pursuit of redemption. Is there really any way back for him under the guidance of Mourinho?

Perhaps the power of the United faithful will help Mata's cause on this occasion. It's clear for all to see that United fans have taken to their number eight. Perhaps the revered coach will give Mata one final chance to impress.

It's certainly clear that Mata is one of the most likeable players in the Premier League, but Mourinho has been ruthless time and time again in the transfer window. It looks set to be an interesting period for all involved.
