Memphis Depay's Manchester United future uncertain

Memphis Depay didn't exactly have an easy time of it during his first season on English soil. The Dutchman, who arrived at Manchester United from PSV, failed to shine under the guidance of Louis van Gaal.

So much was expected of Memphis, but he mustered up a measly two goals from 29 Premier League outings. Unsurprisingly, then, he failed to hold down a regular place in the side, often finding himself watching on from the bench.

But Memphis' former manager, Van Gaal, has now been replaced by Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford and a shot at redemption could be on the horizon.

Memphis, at 22-years-old, still has time on his side to express himself in Manchester and will surely be desperate to make an impact during the 2016/17 campaign.

However, there's a problem: Memphis is reportedly considered as one of the most vulnerable players for the axe under Mourinho.

Memphis future

That has been documented in the Daily Mail, who claim that the new United boss will look to offload as many as four players from his squad this summer. It appears, then, that Depay could be one player heading for the Old Trafford exit door.

But there's one thing in Depay's favour with the same report claiming that there's a limited market of clubs that would be interested in securing his services. Basically, United - and Mourinho - may find it extremely hard to move him on.

Mourinho would have surely already passed judgment on Memphis, but perhaps he really does deserve another season to prove his credentials.

Adapting to the demands of the Premier League is by no means easy - Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial may beg to differ - and Mourinho could be the man to get the best out of Memphis.

It's clear for all to see that the talent is there, but it's now crucial that he settles down and works hard under his new manager.

If Memphis thought Van Gaal was ruthless then he may be in for a shock with Mourinho. The ex-Chelsea boss won't hesitate to remove Memphis from his squad.

In all honesty, Memphis may not be the only United player agonising over his future at Old Trafford. After yet another Premier League season of disappointment - the club failed to secure a place in the Champions League - change is clearly required. Mourinho is the man for the job.
