Arsenal beating Chelsea in battle to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan

In recent years, Chelsea have had the upper hand on Arsenal when it comes to transfers.

The Blues could guarantee a title challenge every season while they often reached the latter stages of the Champions League.

However, after the Stamford Bridge club could only manage a tenth-placed finish and miss out on qualification for any European competition last season, they may find it a lot harder to compete with clubs playing in the Champions League.

The Gunners earned qualification in Europe’s elite competition for the nineteenth consecutive season and have the ability to convince world-class talent to join their club this summer.

And it appears they are winning the battle against their London rivals for Borussia Dortmund’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The 27-year-old is wanted by both Arsenal and Chelsea but The Sun are reporting that the Emirates is his preferred destination.

Mkhitaryan has just one year remaining on his deal at the Westfalenstadion and reportedly turned down a new deal at the German club last month with his representatives insisting they are accessing their options.

The signing of the Armenian is exactly what the Gunners need this summer. The winger managed 23 goals in 51 appearances for the Bundesliga club last campaign and would be a welcome addition given the poor performances of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott this term.

And, with so little time remaining on his deal, Arsene Wenger is well aware that he will be available at a cut price with around £20 million being enough the secure his services.

The signings of Granit Xhaka, Jamie Vardy and Mkhitaryan would be a fantastic start to the transfer window for Wenger and the club.
