New Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho stepped in to offer veteran Michael Carrick a new contract at Old Trafford.

This has been reported by, who claim that Carrick looked all but set to leave the club before Mourinho intervened.

Carrick, 34, has been a prominent member of the United side since 2006 but faced an uncertain future under former manager Louis van Gaal.

The Dutchman failed to renew Carrick's contract in Manchester and the player had been offered no indication from the club whether they would be looking to keep him for a further season.

Now, though, it appears that the ex-Tottenham man is set to commit his future to the club for the 2016/17 campaign.

Carrick contract

The report from Goal claims that United are set to match his expiring contract worth £80,000-a-week. In fact, it's documented that there will be a commitment in the deal to begin talks over yet another extension at Old Trafford in January.

The deal still hasn't been confirmed, but it appears to be only a matter of time before Carrick once again puts pen to paper on a new contract in Manchester.

It's clear for all to see that Carrick is approaching the latter stages of his career, but it's not entirely surprising that Mourinho has opted to keep him at the club.

Over the course of the last decade, the midfielder has comfortably been one of the most consistent players at Old Trafford and Mourinho will be hoping that trend continues next season.

Jose decisions

He certainly has a number of decisions to make over his midfielders at the Theatre of Dreams. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin, who both arrived at the club last summer, endured tricky debut campaigns.

Schweinsteiger failed to maintain his fitness and struggled to hold down a regular place in the starting XI, while Schneiderlin wasn't able to hit top form.

Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini were also in and out of the side and were unable to express themselves on a consistent basis.

Perhaps, then, United's new manager will look to make signings in the middle of the park. Fans of the club will certainly be hoping to see the dynamic change over the coming months.
