The Ivory Coast international is one of the most highly rated defenders in Europe and played a prominent role for Villarreal over the course of the last year.

He may well be inexperienced at the highest level, but it's safe to say that he could have quite the future ahead of him.

Bailly tweets

He's certainly excited by the prospect of playing for the Red Devils and here is what he has tweeted:

Jose tips Bailly for success

United boss Jose Mourinho is certainly excited by the signing of Bailly, claiming that he can become 'one of the best around.'

As reported by the club's official site, Mourinho stated: "Eric is a young central defender with great natural talent. He has progressed well to date and has the potential to become one of the best around.

"We look forward to working with him to help nurture that raw talent and fulfil his potential. Eric is at the right club to continue his development."

Bailly, meanwhile, has insisted that working with Mourinho in Manchester will help his development.

He stated: "It is a dream come true to be joining Manchester United. To play football at the highest level is all I have ever wanted to do.

"I want to progress to be the best that I can be and I believe working with Jose Mourinho will help me develop in the right way and at the right club. I am looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and to starting this new chapter of my life."

Bailly and Smalling

There's every chance, then, that Bailly and Chris Smalling will be lining up alongside each other at the heart of the club's defence next season.

Smalling enjoyed a fine campaign under Louis van Gaal's guidance last term and will be determined to keep his place in the team. Dutchman Daley Blind, meanwhile, may struggle to keep his place in the centre of defence.
