Manchester United winger Ashley Young has a future under Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

This has been reported by the Mirror, who claim that the Portuguese tactician has told Young that he remains part of his plans for the 2016/17 campaign.

Young, 30, had been tipped to depart the Red Devils after a tricky campaign under Louis van Gaal's guidance.

The former Aston Villa man struggled with injury and, when fit, failed to secure a regular role in the starting XI.

West Ham United, who will be involved in next season's Europa League competition, have been linked with Young's signature, but it appears that he isn't going anywhere.

Young future

Indeed, while the trio of Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Matteo Darmian look set to move on, Young could have a prominent role to play in the United team throughout the course of next season.

The same report from the Mirror claims that Mourinho has been impressed with Young's versatility and work-rate.

Former United manager Van Gaal used Young in numerous positions, including right and left-back, right and left-wing and behind the striker.

Perhaps, then, Mourinho will use Young in a similar fashion over the course of the next 12 months.

Twitter reacts

But it's fairly safe to say that the majority of United fans are surprised by Mourinho's reported actions.

Here's how fans have reacted on Twitter:

Carrick to stay

It must also be noted, of course, that Michael Carrick will stay on at the club for yet another season after putting pen to paper on a new one-year contract.

The veteran midfielder's previous deal at the club was set to expire, but it appears that he will once again star for the Red Devils.

After signing a new deal, Carrick stated: “Winning the FA Cup was a special moment and hopefully we can go on to win more trophies.”

Mourinho, meanwhile, insisted that the 34-year-old will be 'invaluable' to him in his pursuit of success at the Theatre of Dreams.

The new United boss said: “Michael is a very intelligent midfielder and a great reader of the game.

"His form this year shows his ability and his enjoyment of the game are as strong as ever.

“Michael has a wealth of experience from his many years at the club and that knowledge will be invaluable to me. I am really looking forward to working with him.”
