It was a night to forget for Cristiano Ronaldo as he failed to help Portugal overcome Austria during their Euro 2016 clash on Saturday night.

The Real Madrid superstar missed a number of fine chances for his national side throughout the stalemate in Paris.

Ronaldo, 31, even became the first player in the tournament to miss from the penalty spot as his strike hit the post.

The former Manchester United star may well be one of the most revered players in world football, but it's safe to say that Euro 2016 has been a nightmare for him so far.

He also failed to fire against Iceland during Portugal's opening game in France, and now BBC pundit Gary Lineker has comically attempted to explain just why Ronaldo could be struggling.

Indeed, Lineker took to Twitter to reveal that he backed Ronaldo to be the top scorer in the competition.

Lineker tweeted: "Think I can explain Ronaldo's remarkable demise. I backed him to be top scorer. #jinx."

Hungary clash

Let's be honest, though, there's every chance that Ronaldo will take his shot at redemption when Portugal take on Hungary on Wednesday.

With 21 strikes at goal in just two games, it has been well documented that he has had more shots than any other player in the tournament so far.

But it would be foolish to write him off at this stage; the ex-United man is still giving his all and could yet fire his country into the knockout stages of Euro 2016.

Will Ronaldo score against Hungary? Have your say below!
