Major League Soccer was supposed to be easy for Frank Lampard, but it hasn’t worked out that way for the Premier League legend.
The 38-year-old was named as the worst signing in MLS history back in April - no, really - and has only made a handful of appearances for his current employers, New York City FC, this season.
Lampard must have thought he’d turned a corner after scoring in New York City’s 3-2 win over Philadelphia Union on Saturday night - the Englishman netted his first goal of 2016 in the eighth minute - but things took a surprise turn when he went to celebrate with fellow Designated Player David Villa after the final whistle.

Villa, who scored the hosts’ second goal at the Yankee Stadium, refused to high-five his teammate and, instead, was seen giving him a dressing down.
Lampard, looking a little surprised, tried to calm down Villa but the Spaniard was having none of it.
Video: Villa gives Lampard an ear bashing
Why was Villa angry with Lampard?
From his gestures, it appeared the former Valencia and Barcelona star was angry that Lampard had failed to pick out his runs on the pitch.
Villa, visibly frustrated despite his brief chat with Lampard, then headed off towards the tunnel while muttering to himself.
The Mirror aren’t quite sure what prompted Villa to give Lampard a very public ear bashing, but it’s safe to assume the experienced former Chelsea man will have been a little perturbed his teammate didn’t wait until he got inside the dressing room.
Incidentally, Andrea Pirlo - New York City FC’s other Designated Player - scored the team’s third goal.
Roland Alberg and an own goal by Frédéric Brillant restored some hope for the Union, but the home side held on to secure the victory.
Lampard trying to win over the New York fans
Lampard, who is the fifth highest-paid player in MLS, was booed by the New York fans last month but said supporters need to be aware of the injury problems he’s endured this season.
“I don’t think the fans are aware of the injury I had,” Lampard was quoted as saying by the official MLS website. “If I’m getting booed for being injured, then there’s not much I can do about that.”
