Lionel Messi has hit out at the Argentine Football Federation after the national side's plane was delayed ahead of the Copa America final.

The Argentina team were set to travel from Houston to New Jersey ahead of Sunday's showdown against Chile.

Ultimately, though, Messi, Sergio Aguero and co. had to wait on the plane before leaving for New Jersey.

And going by Messi's latest Instagram post, it appears that it's not the first delay that the team have faced during the prestigious tournament.

He stated: "Once again waiting on a plane to leave for our destination. What a disaster the AFA are. My god!"

AFA statement

Unsurprisingly, the AFA released a response and insisted that the national team suffered a delayed departure because of weather issues.

Here's the statement:

"The Argentine Football Federation informs that the flight which is transporting the national team to New Jersey suffered a delayed departure due to weather issues. Also, the AFA advises that all of the scheduled times of the transfers are designated by the organizers of the Copa America Centenario."

It's certainly not ideal preparation for Argentina, who will be desperate to avenge Chile after succumbing to defeat in last year's Copa America final.

Argentina legend Diego Maradona has already suggested that the players should not return if they fail to win.

He stated, as per ESPN: "Of course I think we'll win. But if you don't win, don't come back."
