Ivan Rakitic and Luka Modric may well be one of the best midfield partnerships in Europe, but they will no longer be playing alongside each other at Euro 2016.

That's because Portugal overcame Croatia by one goal to nil in extra-time after a dire affair in Lens.

Substitute Ricardo Quaresma settled the tie late on, but it's safe to say that Portugal, who are yet to win a game in normal time in the European Championships, were extremely fortunate to progress.

Indeed, Croatia certainly had the better of the game but luck just wasn't on their side.

And now Rakitic and Modric have duly had their say following proceedings and it's safe to say that they haven't held back.

Midfield duo speak out

Rakitic has insisted that Portugal do not know how they scored, admitting that he can't believe his side are going home.

“They don't have a clue how they scored!” said the Barcelona midfielder, as per

“If you ask them now how they scored, they probably wouldn't know! They say football is the best game in the world, but sometimes it is the dumbest thing in the world! That was tonight, because it is impossible that the better team has to go home.

“I don't know why things go against us, where is justice, why is it always avoiding us? We played great the whole tournament, I can't believe we have to go home.”

Modric, meanwhile, also backed the notion that the best team has to go home, insisting that Croatia dominated proceedings.

“We all agreed better team has to go home,” said Modric.

“We played well the whole tournament and don’t deserve to be out. We dominated, had the ball, created chances and they scored and won from some lucky counter attack.”
