All of the focus is on Lionel Messi this morning following Argentina’s surprise defeat to Chile in the Copa America final.

The Barcelona superstar missed a penalty in the shoot-out and announced his international retirement after the match.

However, some football fans on Twitter believe another member of the Argentina squad is to blame for the national team’s third major international final defeat in as many years: Gonzalo Higuain.

The 28-year-old striker, who also missed gilt-edged chances to score in the finals of both the 2014 World Cup and 2015 Copa America, had a glorious opportunity to put Argentina 1-0 up in the 20th minute following a mistake in the Chilean back-line.

One-on-one with the goalkeeper, Barcelona’s Claudio Bravo, Higuain dinked the ball towards the back post but watched on as the ball rolled agonisingly wide.

Higuain could also quit international football

Higuain was eventually substituted for Sergio Aguero in the 70th minute and watched from the sidelines as Argentina were defeated 4-2 on penalties.

Rumours are rife that Higuain may also retire from international football.

The Brest-born striker has enjoyed an excellent season at club level: scoring 38 goals in 42 appearances for Napoli.

He also boasts a decent record at international level: 30 goals in 62 matches.

However, at crucial times in crucial matches for Argentina, Higuain has often lost his bottle.
