Milan, the son of Spanish footballer Gerard Pique and pop superstar Shakira, has been pictured in tears after Spain were knocked out of Euro 2016 on Monday.

In a photo shared by his mother on Twitter, Milan is seen sobbing into his mother's arms high up in the stands at the Stade de France, while she looks on emotionally as her partner's side were dumped out of the competition.

The South American singer posted the photo with a caption that read: "Consoling Milan after Italy's goal."

La Roja fell 2-0 to Antonio Conte's Italy in the first knockout round of Euro 2016, signalling an end to the sides European dominance at international level.

They are the current holders, having won the tournament in 2008 and 2012, beating Italy in the final four years ago.

The Azzurri's revenge was perfectly timed, and Conte's tactical masterclass against a side that were favourites to progress has made the rest of Europe sit up and notice Italian football once again.

After winning two European Championships and a World Cup in the space of just eight years, defeat against Italy marked the end of an era for Vicente del Bosque's team.

Below you can see the two tweets Shakira sent out following Spain's exit from Euro 2016.

Pique and his teammates will be hurting after their early exit from a major tournament, but they'll have to rebuild before qualifying for the 2018 World Cup begins in September.

As for Italy, they progress into the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 and now face Germany, looking to cause another upset.

Should they get past the Germans on Saturday, then they will surely be favourites to go the distance and win the whole tournament.
