It was clear why Antonio Conte decided to bring on Simone Zaza in the dying stages of extra-time during Italy’s game against Germany at Euro 2016.

The Italian wanted another striker on the pitch as the game approached penalties. Giorgio Chiellini was hauled off, Zaza came on.

However, Conte surely woke up this morning deeply regretting his decision. Not only did Zaza fail to score, he became a laughing stock in the process.

The Juventus forward attempted a bizarre tippy-toe run up, taking an age to hit the ball before blasting it high and wide.

As terrible penalties go, Zaza’s is up there with the worst.

The internet reacts

Of course, the internet showed the 25-year-old no mercy. Hilarious tweets and memes were quickly doing the rounds on social media and, thankfully for you, we’ve compiled the best of the lost.

Zaza was one of four Italians to miss in a marathon 18-penalty shootout, the others being Graziano Pelle, Leonardo Bonucci and Matteo Darmian.

The Manchester United defender’s miss allowed Jonas Hector to score the winning penalty as the Azzurri suffered yet more agony at a European Championship.

Had Italy beaten Germany, they would have been the most feared team remaining in the tournament, having already knocked out Spain.

But now they’re set for a period of uncertainty as Conte embarks on a career at Chelsea.

Whoever the next manager is, his first decision will surely be getting Zaza to practise from 12 yards.
