And Mata leaving United isn’t a major surprise considering that Jose Mourinho sold the playmaker when he was in charge of Chelsea.
Mata to Everton rumour
Another clue that indicates Mata’s imminent departure from Old Trafford is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who appeared to reveal that he will wear the number eight shirt at United.
Of course, that number currently belongs to Mata. You do the math.
Here’s how social media reacted to the claim.
Mourinho sold Mata to United in January 2014, just months after he won Chelsea’s Player of the Year award for the second successive season.
With Henrikh Mkhitaryan set to arrive from Borussia Dortmund, it’s clear that Mata isn’t being considered as a vital part of Mourinho’s plans.
The Portuguese’s arrival always seemed to spell bad news for the 28-year-old. The Mirror recently claimed that Mourinho would give each of his first-team players an opportunity to impress but he doesn’t need to watch Mata to know what he’s about.
And that could be about to cost the midfielder dearly.
