Mesut Ozil claims he is as ambitious as Cristiano Ronaldo

Who would you rather have in your team: Mesut Ozil or Cristiano Ronaldo?

Unless you support Arsenal, it’s safe to assume you’d opt for Ronaldo, an unstoppable goal machine and one of the greatest footballers of all time.

That’s not to suggest Ozil isn’t an effective player; far from it. But there’s a clear gulf in class between the two stars.

However, Ozil believes there’s one reason he should be compared to his former Real Madrid teammate.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is obviously very ambitious, but so am I," Ozil told L'Equipe, per ESPN. "I am a perfectionist on the pitch as well. I want to be successful with everything I do.

"During the time I played alongside Ronaldo [at Madrid], I saw that he always wanted to win everything, even on the training pitch. He is never satisfied and always wants more. He always wants more titles and there are not a lot of players with that attitude.

"Personally, I am not as hungry for goals like Ronaldo. But that's only normal. He is an attacker. For me, scoring goals and providing assists is the same. They both win you matches."

Ozil and Ronaldo's 2015-16 compared

Ozil provided 20 assists in all competitions for Arsenal last season, whereas Ronaldo scored 51 goals - the sixth consecutive season he’s scored at least 50 goals.

Ozil finished the 2015-16 campaign without a major trophy, whereas Ronaldo helped Real Madrid win the Champions League.

Ronaldo enjoyed playing alongside Ozil for three seasons at the Bernabeu and was reportedly disappointed when his teammate was sold to Arsenal in 2013.

Los Blancos agreed to sell Ozil after completing the world-record signing of Gareth Bale from Tottenham - and they haven’t looked back since.

Has Ozil underwhelmed at Arsenal?

Ozil has enjoyed some good moments since arriving at the Emirates Stadium and the majority of Arsenal fans would argue that he’s lived up to his £42.5 million price tag.

But the same set of supporters were hoping Ozil would inspire the team to glory in the Premier League or the Champions League.

Perhaps the German’s crowning moment with Arsenal will arrive next season.
