Real Madrid are aiming to pip Barcelona to the services of Valencia midfielder Andre Gomes, according to reports in Spain.

The Portugal midfielder, who is currently at Euro 2016, has emerged as an alternative to Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba, who is wanted by Manchester United.

Gomes enjoyed a fine season at the Mestalla, with his four goals and seven assists endearing him to Spain´s top two clubs.

Madrid may have won the Champions League but yet again lost out on La Liga to Barcelona, who made it a sixth league title in just eight years.

And that could prompt ZInedie Zidane into action, with the Frenchman reportedly mulling over a 55m bid.

Spanish newspaper Marca believe that Zidane sees him as a long-term replacement for Luka Modric, who is entering the twilight stages of his career.

Luis Enrique meanwhile is looking for another midfielder to ease the burden on the likes of Andres Iniesta, Ivan Rakitic and Sergio Busquets.

Gomes' stock has risen further due to his performances at the Euros, where he started Portugal's first four games of the competition before missing the quarter-final win over Poland.

However, the 22-year-old is set to return for their semi-final clash with Wales, a contest that will see Madrid duo Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo lock horns.

Bale has outshone Ronaldo so far with his three goals in the competition, but whether or not he can fire Wales through to Sunday's final remains to be seen.
