Jose Mourinho to axe eight players to fund Paul Pogba transfer

There now appears to be every chance that Manchester United will secure the signing of Paul Pogba in this transfer window.

Pogba, 23, departed Old Trafford on a free transfer back in 2012, but he could now return to the club in a world record deal worth £100 million.

New United boss Jose Mourinho has already secured the services of Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, but Pogba really could be the missing piece of his jigsaw in Manchester.

But the arrival of Pogba could see a whole host of players depart the Theatre of Dreams.

Indeed, as reported by The Sun, Mourinho could axe as many as eight players during this transfer window.

22 players

A United source said, as per The Sun: “Jose has made it clear he wants to work with 22 key players.

“It means up to eight players heading out.”

But which United stars will be moved on? Well, it appears that a number of high-profile players may have to fight for their futures at the club.

The report indicates that the trio of Marcos Rojo, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger are all at risk, while Adnan Januzaj, Memphis Depay, Daley Blind and Juan Mata could also be moved on.

Rojo, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Januzaj and Memphis all had difficult seasons last term, so it's not exactly surprising that they could be moved on. Mata and Blind, meanwhile, don't exactly stand out as typical Mourinho-type players.

Mourinho has quickly added some top class players to his squad, but it appears that his business has only just begun. It looks set to be yet another summer of change at United.
