Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has vowed to do all he can in order to get the best out of Eric Bailly, after the Ivory Coast international made a promising debut appearance for the Red Devils in a pre-season friendly against Wigan.

The 22-year-old signed from La Liga outfit Villarreal this summer for £30 million, as the Portuguese boss looked to reinforce his defensive options, although the former Chelsea boss has already admitted he can't guarantee the youngster a starting role at Old Trafford.

But Mourinho has promised to do all he can in order allow Bailly to make the most of his potential, in hope of becoming a world-class talent. And the Ivorian showcased exactly the reason why the United boss signed him, at the DW Stadium.

Bailly displayed some neat touches and good nerve at the back, in order to get himself out of trouble, and left Mourinho impressed with his new signing.

“With Eric, the way the fans showed how much they liked his performance when I changed him is enough." said Mourinho, as reported by The Sun.

“Of course he is a very young boy coming from a very different environment, but you could see what he is at this moment.

“I will give him everything to try to make him better and better like I did with other central defenders I’ve had in my hands.

“He has showed the potential we saw when we decided to buy him.”

John Terry and Raphael Varane are two prime examples of players who have benefited from working under the guidance of the Portuguese, with both defenders proving to be world class for Chelsea and Real Madrid respectively.

Bailly made 35 appearances for Villarreal last campaign, as The Yellow Submarine finished fourth in La Liga, and reached the Europa League semi-final, with the Ivorian's solo goal of the campaign coming early on in the competition.

Phil Jones is set to return for Manchester United, following a long layoff with injury last campaign, and is expected to challenge Chris Smalling and Daley Blind for a starting place, while Bailly will have to prove himself when he is handed the opportunity, if he wants to be a regular starter for Mourinho this season.
