Twitter reacts to rumours linking Joe Allen with Manchester United

Football News

Players going between Liverpool and Manchester United is something that just isn't done.

The last player to move to Old Trafford from Anfield was Allenby Chilton in 1938, so Reds fans are going to rest assured that they're not about to lose the much-revered Joe Allen to their most bitter rivals.

There was a rumour going around, perpetuated by a report in the South Wales Evening Post, that even Jose Mourinho had been taken in by the hype surrounding the 'Welsh Pirlo' this summer, but instead of reacting with alarm, both Liverpool and Manchester United fans have seen the funny side of it.

It didn't take long for the story to start doing the rounds, with plenty of fans bewildered as to where it's even come from.

Twitter in meltdown

Allen's reputation might have improved, but United? Come on.

As always, Twitter has reacted with style.

Allen has plenty of admirers after he was instrumental in Wales' sensational run to the semi-finals of Euro 2016. A sudden show of form in the latter part of the last Premier League season also saw him gain new adoration from the Anfield faithful.

Pogba > Allen

While it might be something of an exaggeration to describe United as truly interested, there are plenty of clubs who are, with Sevilla, Swansea, and West Ham all monitoring the situation.

Mourinho has admittedly been a very busy man since taking over at Old Trafford, signing Eric Bailly, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

However, the conventional wisdom is that it's Paul Pogba who he wants to add to his midfield, not Allen, and while you can never say never in football, that's one move that is definitely not likely to happen anytime soon.
