Memphis Depay trolled after Richard Branson gets his No.7 shirt

It's fair to say Memphis Depay's first season at Manchester United wasn't an overwhelming success.

The Dutchman arrived last summer as one of the most highly-rated midfielders in Europe, with the expectation that compatriot Louis van Gaal would get the best out of him.

Unfortunately, Memphis' doubters among the United fanbase were proved right, as he scored just twice and was at fault defensively on several occasions.

Red Devils fans love any opportunity for a good dig at the 22-year-old, so the situation wasn't helped by pictures of entrepreneur Richard Branson holding a number 7 Manchester United shirt.

United's number 7

It's a shirt number which has special significance at Old Trafford, having been graced by some of football's all-time greats, including George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

With that in mind, United fans were less than impressed by the latest player to don the famous jersey wearing that number.

Hilarious comparisons

Suffice to say, the Branson picture was greeted by plenty of unfavourable comparisons from Memphis' point of view.

It remains to be seen whether Jose Mourinho will give the United misfit another chance to prove himself in the Premier League, while rumours of a move away from the club persist.

Memphis has certainly failed to live up to expectations, but Mourinho may not want to do anything too drastic - like signing Richard Branson - just yet.
