Two first-half Steven Gerrard goals gave Liverpool a vital 2-1 victory over Marseille in the Stade Velodrome as they kicked off their Champions League group campaign.

Marseille took the lead through skipper Lorik Cana early on, but Gerrard struck twice in six minutes.

First with a fine 25-yard hooked effort, and then with a twice-taken penalty after Ryan Babel had been brought down.
