Cristiano Ronaldo has vowed to come back even stronger for the 2016-17 season after sustaining a knee injury during the Euro 2016 final earlier this month.

The Portugal captain, who was stretchered off in the first half against France but returned to rally his teammates from the touchline in extra-time, will miss the start of the new season including the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla on August 9.

However, Spanish newspaper Marca have revealed the date that Ronaldo should be back in action - and fortunately for Real Madrid fans, and the team’s manager Zinedine Zidane, they won’t have too long to wait before their star man returns.

The 31-year-old, who is currently on a family holiday in Ibiza, is expected to miss Real Madrid’s opening two La Liga fixtures against Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo.

But, all going well, he will be back for the club’s third league match of the new campaign against Osasuna on September 11.

Tough friendlies ahead for Real Madrid

Zidane will get an idea of how his side will perform without their talisman over the next few weeks.

The reigning European champions take on Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich in high-profile friendlies before their match against Europa League winners Sevilla at the Lerkendal Stadion in Trondheim.

Ronaldo updates fans on Instagram

Updating his fans, Ronaldo posted a short video on Instagram this week.

"Hi everyone! I just wanted to thank all my fans," the world-class forward said.

"I wanted to tell them that all is well and that I will come back much stronger. Thank you, long live Portugal!”

No mention, strangely, of Real Madrid.

Ronaldo to sign new Real Madrid deal

However, it’s expected that Ronaldo will put pen to paper on a new contract extension with Los Blancos once he returns from his holidays.

The former Manchester United star, who is the overwhelming favourite to win the 2016 Ballon d’Or following his recent exploits for club and country, will extend his deal to either 2020 or 2021.
