When rumours began to circulate that Per Mertesacker was facing up to five months on the sidelines with a knee injury, the response amongst Arsenal fans was unanimous.

It wasn't to wish the German well on his recovery, but instead to urge Arsene Wenger to sign a new centre-back.

The Gunners have long needed a superior partner alongside Laurent Koscielny yet the best they have managed in recent years is Calum Chambers and Gabriel Paulista, both of whom so far failing to make the grade.

It would seem Wenger is on the lookout for a new centre-half, though, with one name on fans' lips: Shkodran Mustafi.

The Germany international has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium and, in an interesting development, has reportedly been made available for €25 million by Valencia.

It's worth taking the above claim with a pinch of salt - and a big one at that - but nevertheless, the rumour has prompted Arsenal fans to demand his signing.

This comes after Wenger revealed he is looking for "experience" where a new centre-back is concerned.

According to the Mirror, he said: "We have to look for an option to get a bit more experience. We will see some of our young centre backs on Thursday as well.

"With Per being out, we are a bit short on the experience front and we are looking to bring somebody in."

The Frenchman appears to be aware of the crisis - and the backlash - he faces if he doesn't bolster his defensive options, with a new striker also needed heading into the new Premier League season.
