Diego Costa tells Sergio Ramos he wanted to return to Atletico Madrid

Diego Costa has been heavily linked with a return to Atletico Madrid throughout this summer but it no longer appears that the deal is going to happen.

That’s because Atleti have splashed £28million on Sevilla forward Kevin Gameiro, meaning they are highly unlikely to break the bank to bring Costa back to the Vicente Calderon.

But what does the striker think of a return to his former club?

Well, a video has emerged from Chelsea’s friendly with Real Madrid with Costa and Sergio Ramos in deep discussion, and Spanish newspaper AS claim they know what was said.

Ramos: “Why don’t you leave?
- They won’t let you? They won’t let you?
- Ahhhh!
- Because Gameiro’s coming in…
- Ufff!"

In the video, Ramos expresses his shock at what Costa is telling him.

The report doesn’t state what Costa said to the Madrid defender but it’s fairly obvious from Ramos’ comments - and his reaction - that he told him he wanted to leave Stamford Bridge. AS also state that Costa was so desperate to join Diego Simeone's side that he personally called the Argentine manager to plead with him to wait to sign him.

Whether the 27-year-old would want to leave the Blues for a club other than Atleti is unknown.

However, with reports emerging that Chelsea have put a massive £60m bid for Romelu Lukaku, there’s every reason to doubt the future of Costa.

Antonio Conte has already shelled out £33m on Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi and, if Lukaku does return to west London, Costa may find it extremely difficult to play regularly.

But if a return to Atletico Madrid is out of the question, where could Costa end up? Or will he remain at Chelsea?

It’s certainly an interesting saga to keep a close eye on over the coming weeks.
