After a summer of frustration in the transfer market, Arsenal fans are clinging on to any speculation linking them to new signings as the 2016/17 season fast approaches.
They were given hope last night when long-time target Julian Draxler made the stunning revelation that he had asked to leave Wolfsburg after returning from Euro 2016.
Later reports claimed that, not only were Arsenal believed to be in the running for his signature, but that the north London club were Draxler's preferred destination. Wolfsburg have now added a new twist to the story by releasing an official statement.

Unfortunately, it isn't good news for those Arsenal fans hoping that the 22-year-old would soon be making the switch to the Emirates.
Entitled 'Official Explanation', the Bundesliga club wrote:
"VfL Wolfsburg wish to make it absolutely clear that at no time did those responsible at the club make either written nor oral commitments on the transfer of Julian Draxler within the current transfer period, which is due to end on August 31st, 2016.
"This is reiterated by a contractual release clause agreed upon with Julian Draxler and his management, which does not come into effect until summer 2017.
"VfL Wolfsburg will not be selling Julian Draxler during the course of the current transfer period."
According to German publication Deutsche Welle, the release clause Wolfsburg refer to is a buyout clause set at €75m.
That potential silver lining won't mean much for those Arsenal fans who have been keen on the club adding Draxler to the mix for the upcoming season.
Of course, the history of football is littered with examples of teams selling players they had insisted would not leave.
However, the very fact Wolfsburg have issued such a thorough and definitive statement on Draxler's future means Arsenal face an uphill battle if they really do want to bring him to north London.
"In joint discussions with Julian Draxler, VfL Wolfsburg again made it clear that they would not be granting the player’s wish to make a move," the statement continued.
Arsenal are still believed to be pursuing the signature of Leicester City star Riyad Mahrez, so today's emphatic message from Wolfsburg may be enough to extinguish any interest they had in going after Draxler.
One thing that may give Gooners hope, however, is the fact that the German club have previous when it comes to claiming their star men won't leave.
They did a similar thing before the sales of both Kevin De Bruyne and Andre Schurrle.
