BT Sport have bravely decided to go head-to-head with Sky Sports’ hugely successful Soccer Saturday.

Their new programme, BT Sport Score, will be presented by Mark Pougatch and features a host of famous faces including Jermaine Jenas, Harry Kewell, Robbie Savage, Harry Redknapp, David James and Howard Webb.

But while Soccer Saturday began today - the English Football League is already underway - BT Sport Score won’t start until next weekend, in time for the start of the 2016-17 Premier League campaign.

This appeared to surprise and possibly irk Jeff Stelling, Soccer Saturday’s popular host and one of the few famous Hartlepool United supporters, who went on to take a cheeky pop at BT Sport.

“I wanted to say welcome to our new rivals on the other channel!” Stelling began. “Nothing like a bit of good, healthy competition and they’re on the air at 2:30.

“Oh, sorry, I’ve just heard that although it’s the start of the football season today, they’re not bothering until next week when the Premier League starts.

“Well, in your own time boys!”

Can BT Sport bring anything different to the table?

It will be fascinating to see what, if anything, BT Sport are planning to do differently for this type of television show, where viewers are unable to see the action from Saturday afternoon kick-odds.

But they will be even more determined to make it a success after Stelling’s surprise dig.
