Juan Mata substituted by Jose Mourinho: Manchester United fans react

Football News

It's fair to say that Jose Mourinho's decision to replace Juan Mata during the final stages of Manchester United's Community Shield victory over Leicester City appeared to be a slightly surprising one.

Mata, of course, had only come on as a substitute for the Red Devils in the second half but was replaced by Armenia international Henrikh Mkhitaryan in stoppage time.

Understandably, then, the Spaniard didn't initially appear to be too pleased with Mourinho's decision and it was even suggested by Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News that Mata had to be restrained after leaving the field of play.

The majority of United fans didn't see it that way, however, and it appears that Mata quickly understood why his manager replaced him.

Indeed, as you can see by the video below, Mata and Mourinho shared a nice moment on the sidelines.

United fans duly reacted on Twitter to suggestions that Mata was upset with Mourinho.

Jose explains

Unsurprisingly, following United's victory at Wembley, Mourinho was asked to explain his decision to substitute the former Chelsea man.

He stated: "He played very well. The rules allow 6 changes and I needed to take the smallest player off - long balls were coming."
