Jose Mourinho believes that Paul Pogba signing for Manchester United will help the player become the best in world football.

Pogba, 23, is set to have a medical at Old Trafford next week ahead of his return to the club he left behind in 2012.

The dynamic midfielder has previously been linked to the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid, but it now appears that he's on his way back to England.

And Mourinho is adamant that United are the right club to help Pogba come to prominence. The United boss, speaking after his side overcame Premier League champions Leicester City by two goals to one in the Community Shield, implied that the duo of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo wouldn't let Pogba go on to become the world's greatest.

Mourinho stated: "If you want to be the best in the world and you go to Barca or Real Madrid you're in trouble because those two guys won't let you."

World record possible

The United boss has also insisted that United shouldn't be 'sad' about potentially breaking the world record to secure the Frenchman's services.

He continued, as per The Guardian: “We have signed one defender, one striker, one midfielder and a creative this summer so it has been a good market for us. I honestly don’t know the exact amount of money we have paid for Pogba, though if it is a new world record I don’t think we need to be sad about that. Real Madrid were not sad when they set a new record for Gareth Bale, they were proud.

“It is a lot of money of course but football is a crazy industry, and very often what seems expensive now does not seem so bad in three years or so. I know we are getting a very good player and I think United is the perfect club to bring him to the level he wants to be at.

“We want to bring Manchester United to the top again and if you want to be the best player in the world this is the club to join. We have everything to offer him and he is coming because he knows the club and the city and he wants to be a part of the Manchester United project.”

United fans will already be excited ahead of the start of the new Premier League season. With Pogba incoming, the Red Devils could become quite the force in their pursuit of returning to the summit of the division.

They were impressive against Leicester City and should only get stronger over the coming weeks and months.
