Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville believes Manchester United's imminent signing of France international Paul Pogba will be a statement.

Pogba, 23, is currently in Manchester ahead of his medical with the club in what's expected to be a world record transfer from Italian giants Juventus.

And Neville has insisted that Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are the type of personalities the club need to move forward.

Indeed, Neville has implied that his former club haven't been able to replace the likes of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and co. over the past few years.

"It's important, not just for United, that they sign players of stature and personality," Neville told Sky Sports News HQ.

Neville hails Pogba signing

"They will have the strength and personality, which is what Manchester United haves lacked for two or three years.

"Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra among others left, they had big personalities and they were propping the club up in the changing rooms.

"You need big shoulders and guts to play for Manchester United. The idea of Zlatan and Pogba returning there is big on the personality front."

"It's important that United made a statement, they've spent quite a lot of money in recent years without getting anywhere.

Winning team

Pogba is set to join a winning side, of course, after Jose Mourinho's side triumphed in the Community Shield on Sunday. The Red Devils beat Premier League champions Leicester City 2-1 thanks to goals from Jesse Lingard and Ibrahimovic.

Following the victory, Portuguese tactician Mourinho suggested that the signing of Pogba will be an 'amazing' coup for the club.

"It is amazing that such a good player is with us. Finally, we have him and he is coming to a winning side. Mourinho told BT Sport, as per

"He has to work hard to come to the team."

It remains to be seen as to whether the midfielder will be available for the club's Premier League opener at the Vitality Stadium against Bournemouth on Sunday, but United fans will certainly be optimistic ahead of the new season. There's every chance that Mourinho's side will once again challenge for the title.
