On Sunday afternoon, the news broke that Shelton Benjamin would not be returning to a WWE ring anytime soon.

The former superstar was all set to make his long-awaited return to the company by joining Shane McMahon's SmackDown LIVE, but he revealed in a series of tweets that his return would have to be put on hold due to a serious shoulder injury.

Benjamin, who was released by the company six years ago, had been advertised with returning soon, but he is now in need of surgery on a torn rotator in his shoulder.

The 41-year-old took to his official Twitter account to reveal the news about his injury and has admitted that he is disappointed and saddened to have to put his return on hold.

Benjamin continued by thanking WWE for giving him the opportunity to return and identify his injury, before sending a statement of 'I will be back'.

It's not yet been confirmed whether Benjamin will return to WWE following his recovery, but rumours have emerged of how they were planning on using him.

According to Cagesideseats' rumour page, Benjamin would have received quite a push in the mid-card, possibly challenging for the Intercontinental Title, which is currently being held by The Miz, who is set to feud with Apollo Crews going into SummerSlam.

There have also been suggestions that WWE would have then approached Charlie Haas about a potential return to the company so that they could reunite the 'World's Greatest Tag Team'.

Haas and Benjamin were a big tag team on SmackDown during their time with the company, working closely with veteran Kurt Angle, and it's believed officials at WWE would have tried to get Haas to make a return in order to put them back together and enter them into the title picture.

However, all plans have now been scrapped due to Benjamin's injury.
