Ethiopia aren't globally recognised for their sporting prowess, but you've got to give it to this guy for his efforts to make it to the Olympic Games.

Robel Kiros Habte is one of 35 Ethiopian athletes who have made the long journey to Rio, but his nation are yet to win their first medal at the games, and it's no surprise going by the performance of the 24-year-old swimmer who took over a minute to complete the 100m Freestyle.

Olympic athletes are well known for their perfect physique, however, unfortunately, the same cannot be said for this poor guy, who could enter the record books for all of the wrong reasons.

The overweight performer started the race level with his fellow competitors, but would swiftly fall behind.

Australian Kyle Chalmers finished in first place with a rapid time of 47.9 seconds and joins fifteen other athletes in the next round of the competition.

Habte ended the race half a lap behind the pack and clocked an eventual time of 1 minute 4.95 seconds - one of the slowest times in a race of this kind.

The 5ft 9 tall athlete was the worst of all 59 athletes across all eight heats at the Olympic Aquatic Centre, which comes as no surprise considering the slow race that Habte swam.

As per with these humorous stories in the sporting world, it didn't take Twitter trolls long to start making fun of the 24-year-old.

Perhaps there's hope for all aspiring athletes in the future!
