Who would be a referee?

Verbally abused both on and off the football pitch, match officials are often the subject of hatred from players and fans because of unfavourable decisions and mistakes.

But very few can claim to have been headbutted and punched.

That's exactly what happened to Sergio Castaneda whilst refereeing a match in the Guatemalan third division between Deportivo Chicacao and Oberenos recently.

In the video below, Castaneda shows red to Chicacao's Daniel Pedrosa after the player nonchalantly bumped into him whilst running past.

What ensued afterwards, though, can only be described as disgusting and shocking.

Pedrosa, furious at the decision, headbutts Castaneda before landing a right hook on the referee's left eye. At this point, both sets of players rush in to break up the fight.

Images have since emerged of Casteneda - who is OK - nursing a painful looking bruise on the left side of his face.

Pedrosa has reportedly been arrested for his violent attack and faces further punishment from Guatemala's football governing body.

So horrific was the player's actions that he could be handed a lifetime ban.
