Manchester United fans were up in arms, and understandably so, when it was reported last month that Timothy Fosu-Mensah wasn’t in Jose Mourinho’s plans for the 2016-17 season.

The Daily Mail claimed the 18-year-old Dutch defender, highly rated by Old Trafford coaches, had been informed he was free to leave the Red Devils before the summer transfer window closes.

The same newspaper then performed a surprise U-turn days later, explaining how the teenager had been assured by Mourinho that he *did* have a future with United after all.

Furthermore, it was reported that Mourinho wanted the versatile right-back to sign a long-term contract with the Premier League giants.

This helped to ease the fears of the United faithful, who were worried Mourinho was about to axe one of the club’s most talented youngsters.

Fosu-Mensah has 'agreed' new contract

Fast-forward two weeks and the Daily Mail are now claiming that Fosu-Mensah had agreed - “in principle” - a new long-term deal at Old Trafford.

An official announcement is expected to arrive in the forthcoming days.

Eight United young players - including Paddy McNair and Donald Love, who have joined David Moyes at Sunderland - have left Old Trafford following Mourinho’s arrival.

Big season for Fosu-Mensah

But Fosu-Mensah, who arrived from Ajax in 2014, has done enough to impress the revered Portuguese coach.

The Netherlands Under-19 international will compete to start in the right-back position this season, along with Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian, and should appear regularly in this season’s Europa League group stages.
