Jose Mourinho benches Henrikh Mkhitaryan for Bournemouth game

Jose Mourinho has certainly surprised a few with his team selection for his first Premier League match in charge of Manchester United.

The biggest omission is undoubtedly one of Mourinho's star summer signings, Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenian arrived at Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund for just over £26 million after being named the Bundesliga Player of the Season for 2015/16.

Therefore it was pretty safe to assume the new United boss would make the winger an instant first choice in his starting XI.

But Mourinho has ruined Fantasy Football players everywhere by picking Juan Mata over Mkhitaryan.

Jesse Lingard was preferred for the Community Shield last week but hasn't fully recovered from a knock he picked up and Mourinho has turned to his former player at Chelsea to deputise in the season opener against Bournemouth.

The Portuguese boss does love playing a mind game or two so picking Mata, who he replaced with Mkhitaryan less than half an hour after bringing the Spaniard on against Leicester, has certainly raised one or two eyebrows.

Just to make matters worse for Mkhitaryan, one journalist spotted his new teammates mocking him after losing a game in the warm up.

Less surprisingly, Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will make their Premier League debuts while record signing Paul Pogba has not travelled as he sees out a one-game suspension carried over from the Coppa Italia.

After some of Louis van Gaal's bizarre decisions over the last two years, Man United fans have got into the habit of doubting the man at the helm's team selection, even if it is Jose Mourinho.

The ex-Chelsea boss brings a wealth of experience and success to Man United but that hasn't stopped some supporters criticising his decision.
