Manchester United fans have placed high hopes on their team this season.
Failure to challenge for the Premier League title will leave supporters seething after Jose Mourinho spent a fortune in the transfer window.
It means that every player is under a microscope and will be unforgiven for a poor performance. Unfortunately for Wayne Rooney, he was the one who bore the brunt for his performance in United’s season opener.

There are concerns that Mourinho could drop the captain at some point this campaign and, as crazy as it will be to see Rooney on the bench, he provided his critics with further ammunition with a mistake-filled display against Bournemouth.
As Marcus Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan started on the bench, plenty of supports feel that Rooney is now the weak-link in this team.
His only contribution to the first half was a tame shot on goal with the score at 0-0. Other than that, the 30-year-old was a non-factor. His headed goal made the score 2-0 but that didn't prevent fans from expressing their disappointment.
Rooney’s presence in the starting line-up has a big impact on his teammates, none more so than Zlatan Ibrahimovic. If Mourinho is set on playing the two together on a regular basis, then they’re going to have to work hard on their relationship.
But the Swede’s place in the starting line-up isn’t at risk. Rooney’s, however, certainly is.
Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata, who scored United’s opening goal, are both ready to take his position behind the striker.
