Usain Bolt has become the first athlete in history to win three Olympic 100m titles.

The Jamaican sprinter, 29, ran 9.81 seconds to beat America’s Justin Gatlin to gold at Rio 2016.

Bolt, who also secured gold at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, finished 0.08 seconds ahead of Gatling. (Scroll down this page to watch the video).

This is Bolt’s last Olympics and the flamboyant athlete appeared to be in trouble after getting out of the blocks slower than Gatlin, a man twice banned for doping offences.

However, Bolt found his extra gear in the final 60 metres and ended up breezing past the American.

Bolt’s compatriot, Yohan Blake, finished in fourth place behind Canada's Andre de Grasse, who took bronze after registering a personal best of 9.91.

But all the talk this morning is, of course, about one man.

Bolt: I can sign off 'immortal'

"It wasn't perfect today but I got it done and I'm pretty proud of what I've achieved - nobody else has done it or even attempted it," Bolt was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"I expected to go faster, but I'm happy that I won. I did what I had to."

He continued: "Somebody said I can become immortal. Two more medals to go and I can sign off. Immortal.”

Bolt saved his best until last

Bolt had earlier secured victory in the semi-finals with a time of 9.86 seconds, but he saved his best performance until last.

"After the semi-final I felt extremely good," Bolt added.

"I wanted to run faster but with the turnaround time, we normally have two hours, but we had one hour 20 minutes, it was challenging.

"This is what we train for. I told you guys I was going to do it. Stay tuned, two more to go."

Bolt will now attempt to win gold in the 200m and 4x100m events before ending his Olympic career.
