Edwards targets shock result

David Edwards goes back to Germany this week - the scene of his full Wales debut a year ago - fresh from his first international goal and with confidence that the Welsh can spring another surprise.

The Wolves midfielder won his eighth cap on Saturday against Liechtenstein in Cardiff, and scored his first goal for his country in a 2-0 win against the European minnows. Now Wales fly to Germany to face a far more daunting task against the Germans in Monchengladbach on Wednesday in a World Cup Group Four qualifier.

But for Edwards, 22, it is old ground and he said: "I made my full debut last year against Germany in Frankfurt and we managed a 0-0 draw, a tremendous result. So we have nothing to fear. And if we could come up with a similar result this time around, it will give us a great boost."

Edwards has quietly established himself in Wales' midfield, starting in their last three matches.

He said: "It wasn't a great performance against Liechtenstein, but my mind definitely was not already on the Germany game.

"It was brilliant to get my first goal, even if we were not too pleased with the performance. We needed to play better, but we can now take confidence into the Germany game.

"It is similar to us going to Russia last month after a not particularly good game against Azerbaijan despite managing a 1-0 win. We played well in losing to the Russians, and now we must try to go one better and get something in Germany.

"We might shock them like we did in Frankfurt last year and I am sure they will not take us lightly.

"We stepped up a notch against Germany last time, and against Russia, so we need to do it again.

"We should have got something in Moscow and we will go for the three points on Wednesday. If we get points away from home and win our home games we could be in the top two at the end of the campaign."
