Rooney inspires England win

Wayne Rooney was England's hero in Belarus as Fabio Capello's men were given a genuine scare before winning 3-1 to seal their best start to a modern World Cup qualifying campaign.

Steven Gerrard, who started on the left flank before moving inside, opened the scoring at the Dinamo Stadium in Minsk with a 30-yard strike - but the hosts struck back through Pavel Sitko. Bernd Stange's side were inducing the panic in the England defence that undermined their Euro 2008 qualifiers.

Rooney seized the game by scoring just after the interval, then adding a sensational goal with 15 minutes remaining - meaning England have four group six wins out of four. Gerrard should have extended the scoreline further but was guilty of missing an open goal after rounding the goalkeeper.
