Paul Pogba produced one quality run for Manchester United v Southampton

Twitter reacted in typically over-the-top fashion to Paul Pogba’s first touch on his second Manchester United debut.

The Frenchman, perhaps a little unfocused following his emotional homecoming, miscontrolled the ball and inadvertently setup a Southampton counter-attack.

However, Pogba regained his focus and went on to produce a magnificent individual performance, the like of which the Old Trafford faithful haven’t seen from one of their central midfielders for years.

The 23-year-old was hailed by fans and pundits alike after United’s 2-0 victory and was somewhat unfortunate to miss out on the Man of the Match award.

His hilarious post-match interview with teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic, named Man of the Match following his brace, has further endeared him to the Red Devils’ supporters. They already love their new No. 6.

Video: Pogba's quality run in the first half

Pogba produced many eye-catching moments of skill during the match, but it was his run in the 42nd minute which got fans off their seats.

The former Juventus star picked the ball up just inside Southampton’s half of the pitch before driving his way towards goal, drifting past three opponents before laying the ball off to Anthony Martial.

United fans haven’t witnessed a run like this from one of their midfielders - or, indeed, one of their players - for a good few years.

Had Pogba tried this under Louis van Gaal, he probably would have been reprimanded and swiftly subbed off.

Pogba outstanding on second Man Utd debut

Considering this was his first performance since the Euro 2016 final, Pogba was outstanding.

He had the second-most touches of any players on the pitch (104); he had the most shots during the match (4); he made more interceptions than anyone else (5), and he ran 11.2kms - the third-highest on the night.

At this rate, £89 million will eventually feel like a bargain - or a fair price, at least - for the world-class central midfielder.
