Jonny Evans could cost Arsenal £25million

Football News

Sometimes it seems like the football world is conspiring to make Arsenal into as much of a laughing stock as possible.

Pressure is mounting on Arsene Wenger to sign - well, anyone - after the Gunners kicked off the season with a 4-3 defeat to Liverpool and a 0-0 draw with Leicester.

Even putting the striker issue to one side, the club are in desperate need of a centre-back, with Per Mertsacker ruled out until Christmas and Rob Holding and Calum Chambers severely lacking in experience.

With the seemingly never-ending Shkodran Mustafi saga doing just that, never ending, Arsenal have at least been considering some alternative targets.

Evans slipping away

The news that Jonny Evans could genuinely move to the Emirates this summer was met with a mixture of disbelief, horror, and resignation by Arsenal fans, but it's about to get a whole lot worse.

The Telegraph are reporting that West Brom are taking full advantage of Wenger's plight by demanding £25million for the Northern Irishman.

Ordinarily, that is a price tag that might be laughed out of the room, but Arsenal aren't being left with a lot of choice.

Yesterday, it was reported by the Mirror that Valencia want £50million for Mustafi, a fee well out of the north Londoners' price range.

Arsenal in crisis

The Germany international would at least be a popular addition to the Arsenal squad, whereas Wenger finally deciding to spend some money and throwing it on Evans would raise more than a few eyebrows and voice of dissent.

Time is ultimately running out, with another last resort, Jose Fonte, expected to stay at Southampton.

The good news is that it can't really get any worse for Wenger, and it seems he's backed himself into a corner whereby whatever he does now in the transfer market is going to be ridiculed.
